Is it just me or is there a lot of jewelry in the sale section today? And the mark downs look pretty substantial, especially factoring in the extra 20% off.
I wonder if this is a reflection of shoppers losing interest in the over sized style of JC’s pieces. I can’t tell you how much I wish JC would scale down their jewelry. Especially the necklaces.
I noticed most of the pieces on sale are resin, glass, and brass. The original retail of over $100 for factory made plastic jewelry seems a bit dodgy.
One piece that I have been so tempted by, is the Libretto necklace. Especially after Goldenmeans post about it here. Doesn’t it look lovely on her! However, after seeing all these jewelry markdowns, I am determined to hold off and not pay full price.
The large rhinestones of the Libretto necklace are not everyones cup of tea, but I love the vintage style of it. There are several “libretto” necklaces in my Vintage costume jewelry books. In fact, I think J.Crew gets most of it’s jewelry design ideas from vintage costume pieces. Flip through a jewelry collectors book next time you are at the bookstore. You will laugh at the similarities
Despite some good prices, I won’t be ordering anything from the extra 20% off sale. What about you, will you be ordering any of the sale jewelry? Or do you have any of these pieces already?
Do you think that the sale price is much more realistic for the materials used in JC’s jewelry or is the pricing all in the style?

I bought two pieces of J Crew jewelry this morning: the Fleur locket and the Gold-link bracelet. At those prices, why not! I couldn't imagine spending over $100 on J Crew jewelry though. It's gotta be on sale for me!
I really really like their jewelry, but I would never spend the price that they are asking on it…even on sale (though the extra 20 does make it tempting). I would much rather save my money and buy from you or another Etsy seller and get handmade, high-quality pieces.
I agree with Zoe- I like that Etsy typically has a better price point and you get something that is more unique, more one-of-a-kind. '
Also, Target has gotten really good at ripping off J Crew necklaces lately, LOL.
Like KDot, J. Crew jewelry needs to be at rock bottom pricing before I get tempted. Today I ordered the Cherry Blossom necklace in the smoky color and the black chain bow-tie necklace, both of which seem to go with everything. The EXTRA20 makes them a pretty good deal, I think. I'll have to check out some books on vintage jewelry — thanks for mentioning that! Oh, I bought a couple pairs of chino shorts, too. I am crazy about J. Crew's chino shorts this summer!
oh, thanks for the compliment shannon
the libretto necklace is lovely, and to me worth full price. i get so much enjoyment out of wearing it. i browsed through the sale section this morning and passed on all the other options though! nothing i was so certain i would love that i was willing to buy it for (ugh) final sale.
Nope–don't like any of the sale stuff!
The Libretto and Symphony necklaces are so much prettier than anything I've seen in quite a while.
I like my costume jewelry cheap, as they tend to be "trend" items that don't carry well from season to season. (What's the point in investing in costume jewelry?)I think jcrew is a great option if you see something you like and it makes it to sale. I find F21 jewelry tarnishes very quickly. As for etsy, the items there are either jcrew knockoffs or too hippie-ish for my taste.
I don't like "statement" necklaces in general, but if I had to buy, I would go jcrew on sale.
I ordered the tortoiseshell bracelet. I've tried it on and it's a substantial piece (it could be used as a weapon!). I wanted it, but not for full price. But, $25 plus 20% off made it a good deal.
I was at Target briefly today and they had lots of cute jewelry. I will have to return for a closer look. As Chloe said, lots of JC-inspired stuff there.
Crew stuff is too expensive for me, given that a lot of it is plastic and brass. If I'm going to wear costume jewelry I wear things I've made myself, just because it's so fun to say "I made it!" in response to a compliment
I noticed alot of jewelry on sale at JCrew recently in store and online. Their price point is ridiculous for glass beads and more. I prefer to spend that kind of money on quality timeless items at other stores and discount outlets. I do like their gold plated brass chains. I make sure to wear them on top of clothing so they will not tarnish.
I'm with goldenmeans and Petunia on passing on the recent sale items and picking up the lovely libretto. I normally don't buy jewelry from JC, but I appreciate that they have an array of styles to choose from. I personally tend to favor delicate, classic pieces but I loved the elegant, vintage vibe to the libretto. And compared to the Lanvin grosgrain pieces and Balenciaga crystal double strand necklace at Barneys, these were a relative bargain.
I bought the confetti necklace in black. I can't wait to get it, because it looks pretty long and not very bulky.
I think your right.
There is even a beginning scene in the movie Funny Face that has necklaces that look very Jcrewish
Maybe they are obsessed with old movie fashions like I am
TM–ohhhh–I luveee "Funny Face"–wasn't Barbara Streisand beautiful in that?!
can someone explain the difference between the crystal garden necklace and the libretto?
I need to get to target…and rent funny face
Mkt- I think the garden has rectangular stones while the libretto is all round
MKt- Oops, I was thinking of the symphony necklace. There doesn't appear to be much difference besides the color
@ mkt – I own both the garden and the libretto. The style is nearly identical to the libretto except that the garden has slightly smaller round olive stones than than the adjacent paler-hued olive stones on its other chain – online it looks like one chain of xtals is clear but definitely isn't. The libretto xtals on both chains are the same size. The garden one is certainly a pretty piece, but feels a bit more casual to me so I can pair it with a lot of different things.
