I love a ruffle so I couldn’t resist trying on Idra’s Favor’s Whimsy jacket. I took the size 0 and oh boy, this coat has a LOT going on. The collar is very large and two layers. The placket has two rows of buttons over those beloved ruffles. The sleeves are 3/4 length and quite full. I was totally overwhelmed with all this accoutrement! It’s like the designer did not know when to stop. It’s a shame they just didn’t leave it at the ruffles. I tried it tied but the belt was not enough to rope all this in and give definition.
The material of the coat is not cotton but polyester. It’s sort of like a posher raincoat. Definitely not shiny or stiff like a rain slicker.
I did love the length. The regular size was a perfect, hitting mid thigh at 33″.
The Whimsy coat does feel well made. Attention was spent on this coat, maybe too much. The quality is there so this could be fabulous on some one who can own the jacket and not let it wear them.
OT note: I stopped at J.Crew on the way to Anthropologie looking for the Professor blazer. They did have it and the fit is surprisingly good. Not perfect, a tiny bit big and long in the sleeve but not boxy like most JC jackets. However, the blazer was itchy, even with the lining. And it felt…I gotta say, cheap. Not like a $200 blazer should. So I left it there.

It is too bad they didn't stop at the ruffle on that coat, the ruffle is so great! At first glance I was totally loving it then as I read your post I agreed with you on every point, too much collar and the sleeves – what a shame!
When you get your Paris wardrobe nailed down I would love to see what your picks are
I love me a ruffled coat! When J.Crew came out with the ruffled trench last year I snapped it up! Maybe you could find one on ebay or JCA exchange!
I think you're right about this coat — there is just way too much going on. In general, I love a little ruffle detailing on a coat, but this one looked out of control and it sort of overwhelmed your figure. Too bad! Thanks for commenting on the Professor jacket; I've been wondering how it fits. But, I don't need another itchy jacket. My first impression of the August rollout at JC was somewhat positive, but now I'm just not feeling it. I might spring for the silk lumiere cami in Bistro Orange and one of the art tees. Nothing else is calling my name. Dang. Maybe the September catalog will offer more exciting pieces.
I wanna see your Paris wardrobe, too!
I will definitely share when I get my Paris wardrobe ironed out. In fact, I'm sure I'll be sharing too much and you'll be totally sick of me
I think I need to start by seeing what I have for naturals in my closet. I don't want to stick out like a little American rainbow. At least not every day.
I have 5 or 6 more Anthro reviews to share this week too
OT — I received my August Anthro catalog today, and I was thrilled to see that part of it was set in Paris (thought of you right away!)! Have you seen it yet? They shot the clothes on real French people, all of whom look devastatingly chic and perfectly turned out (mais oui!). BTW, I think you're smart for putting a lot of thought into your Paris wardrobe and for thinking about natural colors. It's been over 10 years since my last visit to the City of Lights, but I recall seeing a lot of chic ladies in black, tan, grey, dark reds, smoky grey, etc. The thing that always amazes me about French women is how effortless their style seems — their outfits never seem overworked or like they tried too hard. And, do they know how to accessorize! You'll have a blast just looking at the people on the street. I am green with envy
I'll stop blabbing now!
I got my Anthro catalog in the mail today too. I am going to savor it after dinner.
I saw it online first and was giddy that part of it was set in Paris.
"chic ladies in black, tan, grey, dark reds, smoky grey" Love this color palette!
Aw this coat looked like it had so much potential, what a let down. Thanks for the review!
