I’ve accumulated a ton of clothing pics in the last two weeks. Since I wasn’t too crazy about anything I tried on at J.Crew, I will condense and post all of my JC reviews together here. I have a dozen Anthro reviews coming plus a few other posts, so I better get on it lol.
Omg seriously?? Lol. This is the size 0 and I am drowning in it. Just like last year’s peacoat, this one fit me probably two sizes too big and the lapels are ginormous!
The merino turtlenecks are also just like last year’s. Itchy around the neck and see through. Such a shame because I adore the colors and the fit is quite good, this is a xs. I have a CK nude tshirt bra on here though which never shows through anything and you can see it clearly
Maybe a pink bra wouldn’t show but with the itch factor and the way the merino tnecks looked raggedy after one wear last year, I’m not gonna bother. I will look for something similar at another store though because I love the tneck and black skinny jeans look.
When I tried this on I thought it was pretty cute. Not nearly cute enough to buy for $98 lol but the ruffles are pretty and not straggly like so many other JC ruffles as of late. However after looking at the pic, the washed out color and texture of the ruffles looks like brain to me lol. This is the XS which has a relaxed not shapely fit on me.
I tried on the XS and did not find the fit flattering at all. I would size down one or two sizes (if I could). I don’t like the way the sweater pulls away from the body under the arms. The cashmere was not uber soft but it was very fuzzy. I can see it piling quickly.
Again an XS and it is not flattering. The sweater bunches around the waist and pokes out under the arms on me. I’d size down one unless you like a loose fit. They had this cardigan in several colors at my store but all of them were pale, no bright or saturated colors. FYI- I saw the cashmere Light Berry crewneck sweater. I had high hopes for this shade, hoping it was just like last year’s plum but it is a paler and I don’t like it nearly as much
I tried this on in a 0 in the Wild Blackberry shade. The Blackberry looked 100% navy to me irl, not the lighter blue it appears online. This coat was a size too big for me. For comparison, I have the P2 Lady Day from last year and the body is a perfect fit with the sleeves being slightly too short. For the Carlin, I would go with a P0, I really need a snugger fit through the body.
Wool Bistro mini and women’s Gingham shirtThese two pieces are the only things that fit me slightly well and I might consider buying. Both are size 0. The mini is quite cute and just long enough for me. It is very short in the back when you lean over though. The Women’s blue gingham shirt fit well but it has a relaxed fit, it doesn’t hug the curves. I quite like these pieces on me but I think they are way over priced. Especially the shirt, which is a very basic cotton shirt yet it was priced at around $60?! Ummm no.
When I saw this on the hanger I thought it might be the Spy trench but I was wrong (shoot, love that Spy trench.) Still a nice coat though. I’ll admit J.Crew continues to do coats really well. I tried on the 0 which was just a bit big on me. I’d probably go with a P2 if I wanted to buy. The Stadium cloth material is thick and very warm. We’re talking winter in Chicago warm. With the two layers of fabric across the front of my chest it kind of felt like I was wearing a pillow lol. It is much too mild up here in WA for this coat, at least for me, but overall a very nice trench.
So what do you think of the items I tried on?
Before I end this post, I have a quick question! Has any one tried on the Ingenue coat or seen the Spiced wine color irl? It looks gorgeous!

I like the cashmere popover on you the color is gorgeous!
I am new to the blog (love it, btw), but wanted to comment on sizing. What is going on with all the stores lately? I am not a 0, I am a 6, but now am finding 6 too big and 4 on the small side (like I could wear it but can't eat). Exceedingly frustrating, especially with online shopping. Can't wait for the Anthro reviews.
Wow, I can't believe how big the Wool Harbor Peacoat is on you. That's kind of ridiculous sizing in my opinion. Ruffles = brains. LOL. Now I am going to think that every time I see that cardi.
how sad! everything was toooo big on you! that is so unfortunate! i had my eye on that first peacoat too but i guess their sizing has really changed!
I'm not crazy about J. Crew clothes in general, but I think the cashmere cardigan is nice, although I am someone who likes a loose fit.
I am so curious about the ingenue coat too! Please please please report back if you've tried it on!
I just bought that cute gingham shirt. My store Mgr said thyey were selling fast, so I grabbed it. I'm a 6 in the shoulders and a 4 in the bust and waist at JC, so I'm used to all the extra room in the middle and bust. It's really cute in a preppy, old school JC way, and I had to have it. Thanks for the reviews!
I agree about the spiced wine coat (though I haven't seen it in person). So pretty. That's too bad about the too-big clothes, but it kind of makes me want to go to my local JCrew because I'm a bit bigger than you are (and I love giant lapels). I'm also a big fan of their wool minis and that gingham shirt is cute!
Too bad about the fit. I often have the issue of being in between sizes, especially in their jackets.
I'm sorry to read about the fit of the boatneck cashmere because i liked the look.
You have definitely given me a new perspective on the Celosia. I do think the darker colors, like black and navy, are prettier, let's say less brainy.
I wish i had read your review today before purchasing turtlenecks online. I have found some colors are softer than others. However, if they itch in any way, they are going back. I can't imagine enduring an itchy neck.
I like the Gingham shirt and the mini on you. The trench is very nice too. I like the Carlin coat but was surprised at how rough the fabric was, especially in comparison to the stadium coat which was so soft.
The Blvd. trench looks fab on you, as do the gingham shirt & bistro mini. Was the Blvd. trench "heavy" or just thick/bunchy?
Thank you for the IRL pics of the Carlin. The cut is flattering, but it's still boxier looking than I imagined it would be. (Maybe because it's too big?) Too bad the blackberry turned out to be just navy. Maybe the bright hydrangea or spiced wine would be more exciting.
Cleo26 – can you say more about the Carlin fabric? Do you know if this double-cloth the same as the lady day?
Hi Shannon! Can I ask a question about the Carlin coat? On the website, it has gathering at the back and looks almost like a tulip silhouette from the back. How did it fit in real life?
Thanks for the reviews!
Emma.
Diana Draw: i believe the fabric is described as double cloth. However, the Carlin one does not have the soft and smooth feel of the double cloth i've touched in the past, for example, that of the Maggie jacket or pencil skirts. It feels like a very heavy and textured wool crepe to me.
I haven't see and touched the lady day, so i can't make a comparison.
I agree with Cleo26. The Celosia looks better in darker colors. I have the navy and love it. Worth its price IMO.
Lol! You are totally swimming in that peacoat — you would need a size 0000 to make it work! (I'll look for JC to offer that size at some point, haha!)
IMHO, you look fab in the cashmere boatneck popover. The extra material under the arms is a slight issue, and many of my sweaters are like that. But overall, the fit is very good on you, and you look wonderful in that color.
As Roxy said, I'll be thinking of "brains" every time I see that ruffled Celosia cardi. Too funny!
I'd love to try the Ingenue coat in spiced wine. Gorgeous!
I never realized you were in WA. Are those instore shots of the Bellevue store? It's my favorite go to J.Crew b&m
Lindsay- Welcome to the blog! JC's sizing is insane lately!
Anon-I don't blame you for snatching up the gingham shirt, it is cute
Cleo- I hope the tnecks work for you. It may be that I just have sensitive skin
Diana-It's a big coat but I don't remember it being especially heavy.
I believe the Carlin is the same textured fabric of the lady day
Booradley-I'm sorry I didn't take a close look at the back. I should have!
Thanks for your thoughts on the cashmere popover ladies! It looks better in the pic than I remember it being irl lol
Montlake-Some are Bellevue and others are pacific place. I visited both stores
Thanks for your comments everyone!
Lol, the brain sweater!
I haven't tried the stadium cloth before but based on the "winter in Chicago warm" maybe I should give it a try. Even though I'm in W WA too I need the extra warmth
I have a couple of double cloth coats and those without the Thinsulate are limited to fall/spring IMO.
Thanks for the reviews. I'm about your size and last year I had a lot of trouble with the petites suiting and coats being too short and skimpy in the shoulders. Looks like that's not a problem this year.
I think all of that was ho-hum, and over priced. YOU look good, the CLOTHES don't!
I like the shirt and skirt, but agree at $60 the shirt is too spendie, I got a similar American Eagle one at Ross for $12 in the Spring. Were similar in size so I really appreciate your posts.
Shannon, thank you for the great reviews and IRL photos! I'm considering the Carlin Coat but am a bit unsure of the collar. I love how you have it turned down in your photo (vs. the way they have it styled on the website turned up). How well do you think it would stay turned down (even when unbuttoned)?
Violet-It seemed to stay down just fine for me. In fact, I didn't even realize it was suppose to be worn up.
Cricket- I'm thinking I will be able to find one cheap at AE or another mall store. I just have to keep my eyes open!
Meli- Totally, ho-hum. Sometimes I feel bad when I try on a ton of stuff and buy nothing but if it doesn't even fit in the smallest size, what can I do.
Hex- I keep going back and forth on the petite sizing. I need the smaller cut but not the shorter arms and higher waist. I wish they would carry the petite coats in store!!
Yikes–now I'm totally tempted!
Oh, love the boulevard and carlin coats. Thank you so much for posting these pictures. It's such a help!
Oh, and celosia = brains! I'll never look at it the same way again.
I have to admit I am hooked on the cashmere popover. I liked how it looked when I sized up, so it's a little slouchy and I can wear a button down underneath. I am hoping for a sale, though, b/c I cannot bring myself to spend or ask for jcrew cashmere that's over $100!
Hi Shannon, sorry for the belated post!
I wanted to order the Stadium cloth boulevard trench when it was being sold online this season, but then it sold out. My only option is to get it off of eBay where it cannot be returned. We look about the same size and the coat looks a little big on you in a 0. Would you mind telling me your measurements for comparison?
Hi May it was a little big on me. My measurements are 34-26-36 5’4″ 118lbs
Thanks so much! I will hold off for now then — we are just about the exact same size, which makes your blog all the more perfect for me! Thanks for all the reviews and tips!
