Allison asks:
Hi! I just read your excellent packing suggestions for Paris, and I hope you can help me. I’m going to Vegas for a girl’s weekend in March. I’m not really a Vegas girl, but I’ve heard the shopping is great! I’m 33, and I don’t want to look like I’m trying too hard. Most of my clothes are from J Crew and Anthropologie. I like classic, feminine style. Do you or your readers have any suggestions? Thanks for considering my conundrum!
Hi Allison, Thanks for your question! It’s been about 10 years since I’ve been to Vegas but I think it is the only city on earth that you can wear anything and not get a second look. Seriously, cut offs and ball gowns are both acceptable when you have gold lame Elvis’s wandering around lol. A girl’s weekend in Vegas is a great opportunity to wear some of those items in your closet that you are saving for a special occasion. Even if it is just a casual atmosphere, why not go all out!
Off the top of my head, I’d pack:
Skinny jeans, a great top, and sky high sandals for night out
A tasteful little black dress for a classy dinner
A day dressĀ and flat or wedge sandal
A couple of tees
A bit of bling: long layering necklaces or a great chunky bracelet
On the plane I’d wear my fav bootcut jeans, a tank, cardigan, and flats
Readers! Have you been to Las Vegas recently? Can you help Allison with some packing and outfit ideas??

I was in Vegas just a couple weekends ago and seriously, wear whatever you feel like. It’s kind of bizarre place because it is all tourists. There is no trying to look local or fitting in. So wear whatever seems fun!
There is a lot to see, so bring a variety of shoes.
Wear flats. Wear flats! Wear FLATS!
My husband and I went for our honeymoon in ’07. The best way to enjoy the place is to check out all the places along the strip. And the best way to get around is to walk, since traffic is always at a snarling crawl. But oh my, if you bring the wrong shoes you will be so sorry. By the end of the trip I was wearing ugly sneakers that I bought while there because my feet were so sore.
As to fashion: it’s such a mishmash, heavy on the clueless tourist look. Really, jeans and t-shirts is just as much a fashion statement as anything you’ll see.
I agree with the shoes – comfy shoes are a must because you will be walking a lot. Otherwise, anything goes! And for the nightlife, bring dressy clothes.
When we went to Vegas for our honeymoon, I remember being so disappointed with how casual it was. Everyone was dressed like they were running to Walmart for toilet paper. Zero glamour
One thing to keep in mind is that it is still pretty chilly in Vegas in March. Definitely bring a jacket and stuff to layer with when walking around during the day. I highly doubt you’ll be able to lay out by the pool. And a nice wrap to keep warm at night is a MUST! Like everyone else has already said, you can get away with wearing pretty much anything in Vegas. Just wear the type of stuff you normally do during the day, and of course, it is always fun to do something a little more over the top than you’d wear on a normal night out at home. Whenever me and my girlfriends go, we always get pretty dressed up at night; kind of a must if you plan on hitting the clubs. Otherwise, if you just plan on hitting the casino floor, whatever goes, and it is still always a blast!
Shannon you are inspiring us all to travel fashionably and pack smart, kudos. Allison second all the posts on walking shoes and bringing a cardigan etc. for chilly spots like plane, some air conditoned resorts. And don’t forget to bring your sunglasses, as I have (like I needed an excuse to go shopping.)
