J.Crew review time..
I’ve been wanting to try the Suckered gingham shirt on since it came out. I thought it would make a great spring sub for the navy check shirt that sold out so fast. I was worried that the gingham shirt would be sheer but I couldn’t see through it in the dressing room. In sunlight could be another story. So now that we’ve heard the good news…

Suckered gingham perfect shirt
As you can see, it looks like complete @ss on me. This is the size 0. The navy check shirt had a slouchy fit but this is just big and awful. Shudder.

The watercolor print is so pretty. I tried this skirt on in the size 0 which was a good fit. It is so short though! Why can’t J.Crew give usĀ just a couple more inches? I could size up for more length but skirts that sit very low on the hip tend to look awkward on me. The hip slung look works on a rectangular figureĀ but not so much on shorty curves. It’s a shame I have to walk away from this one.

Speaking of short, the Wednesday skirt is also just 18″ and very full to boot. Kind of cute but I feel like an ice skater. This is the size 0. I tried pulling it down and wearing it lower on the hip but that just made me look wide. J.Crew has so many skirts in this exact same shape right now, half of which are in the sale section. What makes them think I am going to pay $70 for this?

The last skirt I tried on was the Contrast pencil skirt. Sorry, no pic. I just couldn’t bear it. I took the size 0 which fit in the waist and the length was good. Problem is the material is SO thin. You could see every bit of my top tucked in, all along the waist line, and my thighs and butt looked like porridge. The fit wasn’t tight but it showed every lump and bump. The skirt also fits weird across the front. It sort of clung to the pelvis but then flared out over the thighs.

I’m not sure which cardigan this is. I can’t seem to find it online. I grabbed it off the rack because of the pretty plum color. I didn’t realize that it had no buttons and was cut like a bathrobe. This is the XS. I believe the cardi was merino. I tried belting it with the snakebite belt I was wearing that day, but it was really no better. I think the very fitted arms with the otherwise wide cut looks strange. The short sleeves from my top are showing through; that’s not an off the shoulder seam.

Have you tried any of these J.Crew items? What did you think?

Ooh, thanks for reviewing the suckered gingham shirt Shannon! I am a sucker for gingham (um, no pun intended) and so have been super curious about! It’s a shame that it seems to be so boxy
Who knows though, you are teeny tiny compared to me, so perhaps I should give it a try anyway. What did you think about the fabric itself?
Both those skirts are super cute on you (love the printed one in particular!), but yeah, kind of short! They actually look acceptable on you, but I know I could never pull them off, sigh.
I love gingham too. Would it work better if it were tucked in or layered with something else?
hi shannon,i always love when you do jcrew reviews.
like you am petite and a size 0 and often feel “outsized” because everything is so huge.
i am considering ordering the watercolor mini.
how did you like the fit? like the wool-felted mini in the 0?
is the fabric stiff? are the colors very bright?
what color top would you wear with it?
TIA
Uh Oh! Not one winner among all these items!
after all!
I agree completely with your reviews, and yes, WHY are they making such short skirts? We are growed-ups
The fabric on the gingham shirt is thin but nice and soft. I don’t think it would work on me but if you can size down could be cute!
Ina- The skirt is not uncomfortably stiff but it definitely has structure. I did really like the fit except for the shortness. It is shorter than the felted mini I have. I think it’s closer to the metallic tweed mini in length. The colors are bright and saturated but not neon. I think it would be cute with many colors. Plum, pink, navy, black, coral
Thanks for the review of the gingham shirt. Glad I took it out of my shopping bag last week! Instead, I ordered the navy version of this shirt from Land’s End Canvas. Hope to get it this week! I like many of the Canvas pieces for spring; the scarves are really cute, and the poplin flowered shirts are lovely, too. Love the colors of the Watercolor mini, but I don’t want a mini, J. Crew!!!! Sheesh, how about a knee-length or just above the knee skirt for those of us who are not 18 years old anymore!! Sigh.
I felt the same way about the contrast skirt. I loved it on the hanger, and the silk is gorgeous. It’s just too flimsy. I could see my undies and they were no-show undies! Not even on sale for me.
I also agree that I wish the short skirts weren’t quite so short. Some of them are 15″ and that’s a length that works on 10 year olds, not grown women.
I bought the watercolor skirt yesterday and am completely ~in love~ with it! I’m short and curvy too (5’2″ and got the skirt in a size 4) and I thought the length was perfect. I tried the Nico skirt on a few weeks ago after admiring it on the website, but it made me look so wide and stumpy and the length was awkward. Glad to finally have a perfect skirt experience!
I bought the cardi you have on here in the purple shade…I believe they also have it in grey and nude…
It is actually FABULOUS…it does have skinny arms, so it is not ideal to wear with tshirts, but with a tank top (i like it with the frances cami) it looks fabulous. Also, it looks good with a skinny belt, I use the skinny patent belt in belt..with the skinny belt the wide cut looks perfectly flowy over a pair ot trousers or jeans
Just my two cents : )
Thanks for reviewing the watercolor skirt, Shannon! Like you, I am sometimes “too small” for J.Crew’s size 0 clothing. I got the Misted Gladiola mini skirt from J.Crew last summer, and I liked the length, which seems like it’s about the same as the length in the water color skirt. I am considering wearing it on my honeymoon in June!
