It’s been ages since I bought anything from J.Crew because everything I fall in love with ends up being big, boxy, unflattering and/or see through on me. But we did buy Dh a coat during the winter sale so I had a $50 rewards card to spend. Decided to use it to buy Dh a shirt and just for fun, I finally ordered that cute little beret that has been sitting in my cart forever.
The hat arrives today and excuse my language but it looks fucking ridiculous. It supposedly looks like this

So cute right. Too bad it actually looks like this

FAIL
So yeah. I think I am done with J.Crew

You literally made me LOL.
I think IRL pictures are needed!
OMG!!! Shannon, I almost fell out of my chair when I saw this post. Believe it or not, I ordered this hat last week, and it arrived today. Now, maybe I’m fooling myself or I have been drinking too much crewlade, but I was actually rather pleased with it. So, I must echo KDot and request IRL pics.
In fact, I’ll be brave and will send you a pic of me in the hat and let you decide if I am indeed losing my mind or if I managed to find a cute little beret that I might wear in public with pride and confidence! Whaddya say to that plan???
JKW- I would LOVE to see a pic of you in the hat. Maybe I’m wearing it wrong? or maybe I just never realized I have a little head, a la beetlejuice lol?
Shannon, hilarious!!! You must post pics.
LOL, I am dying. I want an IRL picture too!
OK, Shannon. I’ll send you a pic this Friday — taking Friday off to celebrate my son’s 12th b-day. OMG, I cannot believe I have a 12-year old son. Holy cow…I’m old. BTW, I feel like Bonnie of ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ when I wear that beret. Just give me a pistol and I’m ready to rob a bank or two. LOL!!!
Ah see, now that sounds cute! Can’t wait to see how you wear it.
I’ll try to get some pics later this week. It may be hilarious
I’m so suffering from JCrew fatigue too. I get suckered in to buying something(s) online only to be disappointed again & again & find myself returning darn near everything. I know their perfect fit tee’s fit me & like the scarves I’ve bought as well as a handful of cardigans….otherwise the last few tissue or slub tee’s I’ve bought didn’t survive even hand washing!
I took too many monetary risks on more pricier items, that in the end under-performed in quality. There just aren’t a lot of long-lasting JCrew items in my closet. They self-destruct sometimes with no advance warning either!
I’ve been giving JCrew “one more chance” for too long…but lately you can’t swing a dead cat without reading about Jenna Lyons saying that this season’s collection will be “borrowed from the boys”. That wacked out statement just did me in finally. I don’t borrow my husbands clothing (nor should or will he borrow mine either thankyouverymuch). It’s just time for a cool change.
I totally need pictures of you wearing this hat, I am intrigued now!!!
ROFL. At least if it floods you have a boat to row around in! Echoing the others, I want pics.
Lol Roxy!
Jane- I hear ya! I wouldn’t even mind the boy’s look so much if they offered ANYTHING else. Every piece lately is made to fit Jenna’s straight figure. Would it kill Jcrew to offer one or two tops a roll out to fit those of us with curves??
I haven’t bought anything at J.Crew in ages. My new obsession is Eileen Fisher. I had some gift cards and so I bought this totally fab lightweight merino wool sweater – scoop neck, three quarter length sleeves – sized up a bit to wear it over tissue tees/turtlenecks. Beautiful wool! I’ve worn it about 3 times a week for the past month and it still looks fab, no pilling. Totally worth the price. I’m sure I’ll be wearing it for a long time to come.
Ha ha! The scrolldown of this post was excellent! I totally feel that way about JCrew, not to mention that they’re so expensive for such lame letdowns.
I think we need pics!
You are too much! I literally laughed out loud too!
Agree with you. I don’t know what happened to the brand. Design, fit, quality … going downhill since Spring 2009. Nothing caught my eye in this new rollout. Everything looked slouchy, shapeless, and looked unattractive even on the models. I’m moving on, too…
LMAO! Very nice visuals!
This was hilarious and I second that we need an IRL photo:)
I was also underwhelmed with this latest roll-out. I am a sucker for their prints and do not have fit-issues so I did use my rewards to grab a couple of pieces. I totally agree that the quality has gone way down in many, many items..yet the prices are getting even higher (very noticeable with this roll-out). When I touched and saw a lot of the fabrics in the store..I was really saddened by the thinness and sloppiness of many things. The prices for what you are getting are just way off..too much crewlade is keeping them in business and I keep on saying they are pumping the crewlade into the air as people are paying full-price all over at my store. I don’t want to see J Crew’s demise but I do think it could really go down hill for them if they aren’t careful. They are trying too hard and becoming over-stylized in many ways, yet the quality isn’t fitting. And I think EVERY other mid-price retailer is copying all of their ruffles, layers of jewels etc. and they are gonna have to come up with something newer and fresher. The look is everywhere now and no longer unique to them. They better get with the program or people are going to catch-on.
I’m sorry to hear about your poor beret experience! How disappointing. Since you are done with JC you might not want to do this, but I was wondering if you could comment on the different JCs in the Seattle area. Do you think they differ in terms of what they carry or are they all the same in your opinion? I’ve been wondering if one tends to say carry more shoes than the others, or more dresses, more suiting, etc. Purses seem to be hard to find, but then again maybe I’m not hitting the right store. Or maybe none of them get many. Thanks! I hope you have better shopping luck next time, wherever that may be!
hi there,
I just found your website, and i totally love it! i hope you still read my comment, though it is a bit late in coming…. i used to love j crew, but i too have been become completely disenchanted with their fashion. i am in my thirties, and i remember when they had really classic pieces that were kind of expensive, but it was ok, because you knew you would wear them for a long time and repeatedly. but over the past several years, it seems like their clothes have become more flimsy, more dotted with sequins and ruffles and yet, their prices are going up–even their sale prices are too high! every time i get a catalog, i just get more upset! finally, the other night i googled, “why does j.crew suck now?,” and i landed on a blog by a jcrew aficionado, who actually seems really sweet, and there was a piece on jenna lyons, who actually received a MILLION dollar bonus last year from j.crew! WHAT! i wrote a pretty blistering comment, then forced myself to change it because i was, after all, on a jcrew fan website, but what is the deal? i agree that jenna lyons seems to design mainly for tall, stick-figured women like herself (there was an interview on the website with her saying that, growing up in so cal, she felt out of place amidst the big boobed women. perhaps this is her revenge?). anyway, i am totally babbling here, but i really, really loved jcrew, and i am completely sad that is not the place it once was, as evidenced by my multitude of words on the subject. thanks, though, for your blog. it is witty, and i appreciate the pictures and your interpretations. i am glad i found it!
Sweetsy- I totally agree. Every one is doing the raggedy ruffle and embellished tee look. J.crew is going to need to step up their game design wise or give me a reason to pay 2, 3 times as much for their pieces.
Kristin- I shop at the Bellevue JC and pacific place. I’ve never been to the University store. PP definitely has a better selection. Bellevue carries cashmere and a few shoes but in between roll outs it gets positively barren in there. I don’t think either store has much handbag selection.
Carla- Welcome to the blog! I am LOL at your google search. I completely agree with you. I started shopping Jcrew specifically because I was willing to spend more on pieces that would last. Also I wanted on trend clothing designed and cut for a woman, not a teenager. It’s so frustrating to see Jcrew move away from this. Rofl at Jenna’s revenge!
*rofl*
oh gawd….hysterical
If you’re still looking for a beret, check out this cute and inexpensive one from Christa-Taylor.com. I saw it and thought of you.
